Record Number of Anti-Semitic Incidents in United Kingdom in First Half of 2017

UK sees rise in anti Semitic incidents Record Number of Anti-Semitic Incidents in United Kingdom in First Half of 2017

In the first six months of this year there were an unprecedented 767 anti-Semitic incidents - up 30 per cent on the 589 incidents recorded during the first six months of 2016.

Antisemitic attacks and hate incidents rose by almost a third to record levels during the first six months of this year, prompting a warning that Britain's Jews are facing a sustained rise in the amount of abuse and violence targeted at them.

There is no obvious single cause for the record total, according to the CST, which has recorded the data since 1984, but the rise may partly be driven by growing concern over anti-Semitism, as well as increased reports from security guards and information sharing agreements with British police forces. It may also partly be a effect of increased reporting from commercial security guards protecting Jewish communal locations. Everyone in this country has a right to live without fear of abuse or attack and we must as a nation firmly condemn this hatred and all other forms of bigotry.

"It is likely that the incident totals recorded by CST reflect a general, sustained rise in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in an average month".

The most common type of incident recorded involved verbal abuse randomly directed at Jewish people "while going about their daily business in public places" - 568 cases.

But Jewish people are increasingly being targeted on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, with 140 recorded incidents.

Incidents of damage and desecration to Jewish property increased by two-thirds to 51, while there were 80 violent anti-Semitic assaults reported to the CST - up 78 per cent.

Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust added that it "extremely concerning that the first six months of 2017 saw a record number of antisemitic hate incidents in the United Kingdom, as reported by the CST today".

Attacks included verbal abuse at Jewish people in public, extremists attacking synagogues or doing the "Heil Hitler" salute or daubing swastikas on community centres or places of worship.

Nearly three-quarters of all incidents were recorded in Greater London and Greater Manchester, the two largest Jewish communities in the UK.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said: "Anti-Semitism has no place in this country, which prides itself on openness, diversity and tolerance".

She added: "I am clear that one such incident is one too many and we will continue to do everything we can to stamp out the hatred and division that blights our communities".

He added: "Police forces are committed to working with CST to respond to all instances of hate crime and protect the Jewish community from this abuse. If we are to pride ourselves on being a diverse, equal and welcoming country we have to reverse this worrying trend".

The figures come after the police and CPS were accused of "betraying" British Jews as they recorded a significant increase in hate crime.

At the same time the number of charges for those perpetrating hate crimes against Jews fell "drastically", with alleged perpetrators charged in fewer than a tenth of cases, campaigners say.

This time, however, the number of anti-Semitic incidents did not recede after the fighting ended, unlike with previous conflicts in 2006 and 2009, when the charity registered drops in hostility towards Jews with the announcement of ceasefires.

"The reason for this rise appears to be a failure to enforce the law", he argued.

Jewish Labour MPs, including Ruth Smeeth and Luciana Berger, were also targeted by online trolls previous year.
