Researchers at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2017 have suggested that people with a family history of Alzheimer's disease who experience hearing loss, are more likely to also experience a decline in their brain function.
Researchers at Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, investigated whether people with very early memory declines also showed changes in their everyday speech.
They found that sticking to the specially designed MIND diet and Mediterranean diet was associated with 30-35% lower risk of cognitive impairment in healthy older adults.

In the study, researchers looked at two speech samples, taken two years apart, from 264 participants. Of these participants, 64 were identified as having eMCI based on cognitive testing over 8-10 years.
By asking participants to describe a simple picture, the study offers a better representation of the problems that people face when communicating as compared to clinical single-word tests, which is how language is typically assessed in this context, Mueller explained.
Study participants with eMCI declined faster on two measures of speech: content and fluency. The content of their speech was less specific, with a higher use of pronouns like "she", "it", and "them".
The participants' fluency was more disrupted - which meant there were more hesitations, repeated words, and filled pauses. Also, those with eMCI used less complex syntax and shorter sentences, and took more time to express the same amount of content as the cognitively healthy group.
'This early-stage research was conducted in a small number of people, but in future innovative tests like this could help to detect the early signs of dementia, which could lead to a more accurate and timely diagnosis.
"[Today] we confirm everything that we've known, that changing your dietary pattern is actually quite impactful and you can change your trajectory of cognitive decline-if you adhere to a Mediterranean diet or other diets that are low in saturated fats, processed flour and sugar,"Maria Carrillo, Ph.D., chief science officer at the Alzheimer's Association (ALZ) tells FOX Business". "While recognizing that all medical procedures carry some degree of risk, this study implies that planned hospital encounters may not be as risky to the cognitive health of older persons as emergency or urgent situations".

Of the 930 participants, 613 were hospitalised at least once over an average of nearly five years of observation. However, elective hospitalizations, such as for scheduled surgery, were not associated with a change in the rate of cognitive decline. Non-elective hospitalisations were associated with an approximately 60% acceleration in the rate of decline.
