After student Otto Warmbier's death, US weighs travel ban on North Korea

Warmbier, who had been detained since March 2016, died in an OH hospital Monday, one week after the North Korean government medically evacuated him.

We would like to thank the wonderful professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who did everything they could for Otto.

Doctors had described his condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness" and said he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause.

The college student died shortly after his return to OH after being held for more than 17 months.

Mr Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years' hard labour in March 2016 after being tried for attempting to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel.

Warmbier was on a tourist trip when he was arrested and handed a 15-year sentence in March last year, a punishment USA officials decried as out of proportion to his alleged crime.

North Korean officials have said that Warmbier went into a coma not long after his incarceration, when he took a sleeping bill after a bout of botulism, a rare and potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

The U.S. government strongly warns Americans against traveling to North Korea, but doesn't prohibit it, despite other sanctions targeting the country.

South Korea's Blue House on Tuesday cited President Moon separately as saying: "It is very deplorable that North Korea does not respect human rights".

Warmbier died in OH on Monday, days after being released by North Korea.

It came as the travel agency that organised Warmbier's North Korea says it will no longer take United States citizens to the country.

The US regularly conducts "assurance and deterrence" bomber flights with its military partners in the region, but the drills are often criticized by North Korea as provocative acts.

Hamilton County's Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco's (LAK'-schmee sam-MAHR'-kohz) office said Tuesday that only an external examination was performed on Otto Warmbier's body, per his family's request.

"And we've had I think positive movement on China over the past five months of this administration". Though Kanter said that Warmbier was stable at the time and breathing on his own, "he has not spoken".

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said the US should think about banning USA citizens from visiting North Korea.

The move to stop taking Americans to North Korea comes after the country had relaxed some of its travel restrictions in recent years - including granting tourist visas to Americans in 2010, Young Pioneer Tours says.

He said that it was only after Trump intervened that a release for his son was "aggressively pursued".

Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday he appreciated efforts by Chinese President Xi Jinping "to help with North Korea", adding "It has not worked out".

Warmbier was in the process of leaving North Korea on January 2, 2016, when he was detained at the airport.

"Working with such a country, we must achieve the goal of the complete dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear program".

Three other Americans - Kim Dong Chul, Tony Kim and Kim Hak Song - are still being held captive in North Korea.

Warmbier's release came amid mounting tensions following a series of missile tests by Pyongyang, in an arms buildup that Washington has dubbed "a clear and present danger to all".

North Korea in an area of allowing access to foreigners who have been arrested while in North Korea, which it is obligated to do under standard diplomatic procedure, it hasn't met those obligations, as it doesn't meet its obligations in other areas.

In a March 2016 hostage video, Warmbier "confessed" to the crime and claimed that the USA government had bribed him to tamper with the poster.

If Warmbier had been arrested or otherwise mishandled by North Korean security officials in such a way that it affected his ability to breathe, Spitz said, "it will not show at all".
