Rep. Steve Scalise remains in critical condition at a Washington, DC-area hospital following a shooting on Wednesday.

Scalise was in dire condition when he was shot at the Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump has called for unity in the wake of the horrific shooting incident in which a top Republican leader was injured, saying that despite differences the devotion to the country brings the people together.

While there are a host of activities set for the Belmont Stakes , the actual race doesn't actually occur until the evening. Tapwrit finished sixth in the Derby after encountering early trouble, but Pletcher felt it was "a sneaky good" race.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

He said that Scalise has been mostly sedated but they've been able to turn down his medication enough for him to respond to family members. The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time.

They say he is able to communicate through notes, and signed the game ball from Friday's congressional baseball game. Sava said Scalise "clearly knows" his family is there and "appreciates" their presence.

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.

Scalise has had two surgeries and will require additional operations, Sava said, adding that it's hard to predict how long he will be in the hospital. Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C.
