The European Commission said the one-day meeting between its chief negotiator Michel Barnier and Brexit Secretary David Davis will take place "as part of the sequenced approach to the talks" set out by the EU, which require progress to be made on withdrawal arrangements before any talks on trade can begin.
He hailed that the first session was "important", "open" and "useful indeed to start off on the right foot as the clock is ticking", Xinhua news reported. Priorities drawn up at the EU's insistenceThe two other priorities on the initial agenda - drawn up at the EU's insistence - are how to maintain a "soft" border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic after Brexit, and the UK's financial obligations to European institutions and programmes.
A top German business lobby is urging negotiators for Britain and the European Union to quickly come to an agreement over how Britain's departure from the EU will affect cross-border trade - and avoid a "hard Brexit". "In the first step we will deal with the most pressing issues, in the second step will scope our future partnership", added Barnier.
Mr Barnier's insistence on sticking to the EU's priorities for the negotiations comes after Mr Davis appeared to soften his stance on the schedule for the talks.
"There will be no austerity on my side, I will display a constructive attitude firmly based on interests and support of the (European Union) 27, and I will all the time seek to the continued support of the European Parliament", he said.
A special dialogue involving senior negotiators from each side has been set up to consider the issue, with Mr Davis' senior mandarin Olly Robbins holding talks with Mr Barnier's deputy Sabine Weyand on the issue.
"So we have got a very sensitive political context, a very clear objective which is to preserve all the dimensions of the Good Friday Agreement and we have an terrible lot of work to do - bilaterally, and also in coordination with the Dublin government on my side, so that we come up with imaginative and concrete solutions along the lines I have described, particularly taking into account the single market".
Still, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson remained upbeat Monday, saying he thinks the Brexit negotiations will yield "a happy resolution that can be done with profit and honor for both sides".
So now that the negotiations have started, we are determined to get on with the job and deliver that certainty as soon as possible.
Two months ago, the Prime Minister could have looked forward to Britain having a strong negotiating hand on Day One of Brexit talks; now it is hard to see how her position could be any weaker.
"We are not turning our backs on Europe", he said in the statement.
"Michel and I will meet every four weeks bringing our teams together for a number of days at a time".
"We must lift the uncertainty caused by Brexit", Mr Barnier added.
Official negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union regarding the U.K.'s future exit from the union begin on Monday, almost a year after the British people voted to leave the European Union. They should finally tell us what the aim is.
Regarding the future relationship with the European Union, the secretary said that Britain hasn't changed its position despite the Conservative majority was wiped out after the snap election on June 8. Johnson was in a separate meeting with European Union foreign ministers.
The border between Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member, will become the only land border between the UK and the European Union after Britain exits the bloc in March 2019.
