Amit Shah declines to comment on Presidential candidates

Malita Javier | 19 Junio, 2017, 14:41

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, state BJP president Raosaheb Danve and Shiv Sena youth wing chief Aditya Thackeray were also present during the meeting. The meeting of the board, which is BJP's highest decision making body, will also be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah.

However, Thackeray reiterated his pet names for the top post - RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and agro-scientist M.S. Swaminathan.

Thackeray is also understood to have informed Shah that the BJP must announce first its candidate for Presidency before his party can take a decision on whether to support the nominee.

"You (Shiv Sena) are very much a part of the NDA and must support the NDA nominee and trust the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modiji", Shah reportedly told Uddhav according to a Sena source.

Springing a surprise, the BJP on Monday named Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit and a BJP leader, as the ruling NDA's candidate for the July 17 Presidential election. The three-member ministerial team formed to build consensus - comprising Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu - has already reached out to the opposition.

"Once the names have been suggested, we will finalise our name for the post of president", he said. "We hope he will be the unanimous candidate for the election", Shah said.

Reports on Saturday said BJP has prepared four sets of nomination papers, leaving the space for the name of the candidate blank.

Speaking about the recent farm loan waiver announced by the Maharashtra government, Shah said, "Through it we are offering relief to the farmers".

In a stinging attack on Shiv Sena, Congress leader Nitesh Rane said today that Shiv Sena should be included in the Guinness World Records for issuing the most number of threats to withdraw support to the BJP-led government in Maharashtra.

The BJP is expected to win the Presidential election comfortably.

The Sena statements came barely 48 hours before a Shah-Thackeray "summit" scheduled for Sunday morning to solicit and secure its support for an NDA candidate for the Rashtrapati Bhavan. We were expecting them to disclose the name so that we can discuss it in our party and other opposition parties.
