Comey's detailed and vivid recollections of his one-on-one conversations with Trump were revealed in seven pages of prepared testimonyreleased Wednesday, the day before his much-anticipated appearance before the Senate intelligence committee. Comey told the House Intelligence Committee in March that the FBI was investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, the nature of any links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, "and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts".
Comey stays behind in a conference room to speak privately with Trump after intelligence officials brief the president-elect in his NY headquarters about explosive findings that the Russians tried to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
He seems to assume the right to say and do whatever he wants that he enjoyed as a real-estate executive should apply even more to the World's Most Powerful Man.
In his Wednesday statement, Comey described his meetings with Trump one by one.
The Washington Post reported Trump's top lawyers and advisers are reportedly encouraging the president to refrain from posting on social media during Comey's testimony on Thursday, out of concern for political and legal repercussions.
"A few moments later, the President said, 'I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.' I didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed".
On March 20, he revealed publicly that the FBI had been investigating the Trump campaign since last July - in a House hearing which prefaced the House investigation nearly spiraling out of control.
Other legal experts said, however, that details surrounding the February 14 conversation could indicate that Trump meant to interfere with the Flynn probe. But Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Adm. Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, angered members of the Senate intelligence committee by staunchly refusing to answer questions about conversations they had with Trump.
The ex-FBI director's testimony recounts his conversations with the apparent precision of a veteran lawman. Comey's first face-to-face meeting with the president-elect took place at Trump Tower in January, two weeks before Trump was sworn in.
Norm Eisen, who served as special counsel for ethics in the Obama White House and is now a leading critic of Trump's business conflicts, came to a similar conclusion.
Comey added that he told Trump "you will always get honesty from me". Worse yet, at the February 14 Oval Office meeting where the president asked that the FBI stop investigating Michael Flynn, several high-ranking members of the intelligence community and the attorney general were present when Trump asked Comey to stay behind for a private meeting.
"I think the request is inappropriate", said Andrew Arena, a retired senior Federal Bureau of Investigation official.
Comey is the same guy who, in a July news conference, recommended no charges against then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Asked whether the president stood by earlier assertions that he had neither sought Comey's loyalty nor asked for the Flynn investigation to be dropped, she said: "I can't imagine the president not standing by his own statement".
Trump returns to the salacious allegations against him, calling them disgusting and saying he's considering ordering Comey to investigate and disprove them. Two days after firing him, Trump said it was because of "this Russian Federation thing".
In Comey's statement, he confirms numerous bombshell reports circulating in the press since Trump fired him on May 9: that Trump met with him one-on-one an unusual number of times; that Trump asked Comey for his "loyalty" in a conversation about Comey's future at the helm of the FBI; and that Trump repeatedly lamented the "cloud" the FBI's investigation of Russian Federation had put over his presidency.
