Tehran attackers were Iranians, fought for IS in Syria and Iraq - ministry

A female terrorist who took part in the attack on Imam Khomeini shrine has been arrested alive and is now in custody of the Ministry of Intelligence.

The United States on Thursday condemned the the twin terrorist attacks in Tehran earlier in the day that left at least 12 people dead and almost 40 wounded.

The Revolutionary Guards also said in a statement published on state media that it "has proved in the past that it will take revenge for all innocent blood shed" in Iran.

In an interview on state TV, Reza Seifollahi, deputy chief of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said the attackers "had joined Daesh [IS] from a number of regions inside Iran".

Tehran MP Elias Hazrati has said that the assailants were armed with two Kalashnikovs and a handgun.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister rejected an accusation by Iran's Revolutionary Guards that Saudi Arabia was behind twin attacks in Tehran on Wednesday that killed at least 12 people. Five people believed to be planning a third attack were arrested, officials said.

The state TV report did not provide further details, or say whether the shooting was linked to another attack Wednesday on the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In a simultaneous attack to the south of Tehran, four attackers opened fire at a shrine dedicated to Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic republic, Fars reported.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility and released a video purporting to show gunmen inside the Parliament building and one man, who appeared wounded, on the floor.

Attacks are highly rare in Tehran and other major cities though a Sunni militant group named Jundallah and its splinter group Ansar al Furqan have been waging a deadly insurgency, mostly in more remote areas, for nearly a decade.

Three of the gunmen were shot dead in an exchange of gunfire, while another blew himself up.

Iran's restive Sistan and Baluchestan province, in the southeast on the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, is home to the Balouch minority and has always been a hotbed of Sunni insurgents fighting the Shiite-led Islamic Republic.

And the Islamic State is not based in Iran - it emerged in Syria and Iraq and is allegedly funded by Saudi Arabia, Trump's favorite Middle Eastern ally. It was the first time that ISIS, a Sunni Muslim group fighting Iranian-backed militias in Syria, has claimed responsibility for an attack in Iran and the choice of locations were also highly symbolic.

"Now that they are unable to maintain the promise of territory, attacking Iran is to their advantage", she said.

An interior ministry official said the attackers had been dressed as women and gained access through a visitors' entrance.

IS-affiliated Amaq social media released a video allegedly showing the attacker storming a parliament office, shooting at staff and shouting IS slogans in Arabic.

Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia and Shia-majority Iran are staunch regional rivals. The Sunni extremist group is at war with Iran-backed forces in Syria and Iraq.

Wearing fake suicide vests, they went on to knife revellers in the nearby Borough Market before being shot dead by police. After a period living together in Morocco, Zaghba's parents separated and the mother returned to Italy, Corriere wrote.

Tehran has also propped up Iraq's fight against ISIS, advising Baghdad's predominantly Shiite forces and militias in the battle to recapture cities such as Tikrit and Ramadi. The remaining two attackers were arrested, the Iranian Labour News Agency reported.
