US Senate panel requests Trump campaign documents

Galeno Paniagua | 28 May, 2017, 01:13

The Washington Post reports Jared Kushner discussed setting up a line of secret communication between the Trump transition and the Russians.

Kislyak, according to The Post, told higher-ups in Moscow that Kushner suggested the proposal in a December meeting at Trump Tower - which former national security adviser Michael Flynn also attended.

The White House disclosed the meeting between the Trump aides and Kislyak in March and played down its significance.

Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump's husband and one of President Trump's most trusted advisors, discussed with the Russian ambassador the possibility of using Russian diplomatic facilities for the communications channel, it has been alleged.

Reuters reported that Kushner had at least three previously undisclosed contacts with the Russian ambassador during and after the 2016 presidential campaign.

Neither The White House nor Flynn would comment on the story to The Post.

French president's Cabinet mixes old and new, left and right
The naming of a new prime minister has been Mr Macron's first big appointment following hours of restless speculation in France . Philippe and Macron chose experienced politicians from the left, the center and the right for the main positions.

Lt Gen McMaster and Mr Cohn, who were accompanying Mr Trump as part of his first foreign trip as president, were asked several times about the reports during a news conference in Italy. The bank is under US sanctions and was implicated in a 2015 espionage case in which one of its NY executives pleaded guilty to spying and was jailed.Exactly what investigators want to know from Kushner (whose lawyer said he will cooperate) isn't clear.

Reached Friday, an administration official said there would be no comment on the latest Kushner report.

Reuters meanwhile, citing seven unnamed current and former U.S. officials, reported on Friday that Kushner had at least three contacts with the Russian ambassador that he did not previously disclose, including some during the campaign.

This news also feeds directly into what the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a special counsel and multiple committees in Congress are investigating: Did Trump's campaign worked with Russian Federation to influence the election? Of interest to FBI investigators is likely Kushner's several meetings with the Russian ambassador. The White House did not acknowledge any other contacts between Kushner and Russian officials.

The U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russian Federation worked to hurt Clinton and help Trump during the 2016 election, in part by stealing documents and emails from the Democratic Party and from Clinton's campaign chairman and then releasing embarrassing ones on a near daily basis in the final weeks of the campaign through WikiLeaks.

The details were shared with CNN as an explanation to The Washington Post reporting, which it said was based on intercepts of conversations between Russia's ambassador and Moscow.

The cascade of news showed that the multiple Russian Federation inquiries are advancing and that leaks continue to spout from the government, giving administration officials no respite even as they trot the globe.

This is a damning piece of news for the White House caught under an avalanche of revelations about its dealings with Russian Federation.

Mr Kushner's lawyer Jamie Gorelick said he has "no recollection" of the calls with Mr Kislyak as reported by Reuters.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has "asked President Trump's political organization to gather and produce all Russia-related documents, emails and phone records going back to his campaign's launch in June 2015", The Post reported.

Former CIA director John Brennan revealed this week that intelligence chiefs had been looking into suspicious contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials since mid-2016.

But Burns added that it does not make sense why members of the Trump transition team would not communicate "transparently and openly" with foreign officials.
