Danilo Martir | 20 May, 2017, 11:59

Kiwi cyclist George Bennett is on the cusp of winning his first ever professional race after claiming the leader's yellow jersey in stage six of the Tour of California.

Bennett, a 27-year-old New Zealander racing for Lotto NL-Jumbo, had the fourth-fastest time on the course and finished in 28 minutes, 45.74 seconds, averaging just more than 30 miles per hour.

Dibben covered the 15-mile (24km) time trial course around Big Bear Lake in 28 minutes, 27 seconds, then sat back while the overall contenders took their shot at the race lead.

Brent Bookwalter (BMC) finished second after his strong ride against the clock and Mt. Baldy climb victor Andrew Talansky (Cannondale) placed third in the time trial.

A blistering individual time trial on Saturday (NZT) in the sixth of seven stages has given LottoNL-Jumbo rider Bennett a lead of 35 seconds.

The race concludes Saturday in downtown Pasadena following a 123km ride that begins at Mountain High ski hill in the San Bernardino mountains. Today I can't believe it man, I just went.

"This is full-gas racing tomorrow", he said. He started Friday in fourth place, 44 seconds off the lead. When I looked at the profile of the time trial course it was fast and furious. I do not know where it came from.

"It's a big shock for me", Dibben said.

"The wind made me nervous sometimes", Dumoulin said.

"I think no one expected this less than I did", said Bennett, who finished seventh overall a year ago.

"It gives me a lot of hope for the future and a lot of optimism and a lot of confidence". I just went out there... if you're familiar with the expression "twisting a nut, ' that's all can think of".

Brent Bookwalter moved up to fourth overall, 45 seconds back, after covering the course in 28:34 to finish second on the day.

"We all knew it wasn't going to be pretty", he said. "Lots of oxygen debt and sort of delirious at the end". Rob Britton won the Most Courageous jersey for the second consecutive day and Daniel Alexander Jaramillo maintained the King of the Mountain jersey; there were no mountain climbs on Friday.
