Why Macron's Win Is Good for Europe's Worst-Off Banks

Galeno Paniagua | 19 May, 2017, 21:39

A combination photo shows U.S. President DonaldTrump walks down the stairs from the Air Force One in NY, the United States, May 4, 2017 and Emmanuel Macron greets his supporters at a rally in Paris, France, on April 23, 2017, respectively.

A crowd of Macron supporters roared with delight, jubilantly waving red, white and blue tricolour flags at a victory party outside the Louvre Museum in Paris.

In his speech to the crowd, he said: "Tonight you won, France won". "Everyone said it was impossible".

Mr. Macron, 39, easily beat far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen after a bitter contest pitting his pro-EU liberal platform against her calls for France to close its borders and pull out of the euro single currency. In the runoff against Le Pen, he notched up nearly two-thirds of the vote, according to exit polls.

Macron's movement is banking that voters, having elected him, won't want to see his presidency hobbled so quickly. It's my responsibility to hear them.

The centrist's emphatic victory, which also smashed the dominance of France's mainstream parties, brings huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval to follow Britain's vote to quit the EU and Donald Trump's election as US president.

Le Pen responded to defeat by vowing she would lead her anti-immigration National Front (FN) strongly into the legislative elections.

Who is Emmanuel Macron?

The party's new look won't come about before the parliamentary elections on June 11 and 18.

His 64-year-old wife Brigitte joined him on stage with her children and grandchildren, a sign that they will be a highly visible couple when he is in office. "(But the media says I can't talk about that)" Mrs Clinton added in an apparent reference to several attempts to derail Mr Macron's campaign by hacking its communications and distributing purportedly leaked documents.

Mr Macron's victory marks the third time in six months - following elections in Austria and Holland - that European voters shot down far-right populists who wanted to restore borders across Europe.

Congratulatory messages poured in from overseas.

The France Insoumise (France Unbowed) of firebrand leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon was trailing in fourth with 13-15 percent, ahead of the tattered Socialists of outgoing President Francois Hollande on eight-nine percent. Until now, modern France had been governed either by the Socialists or the conservatives, but both of their candidates were eliminated before the runoff. "We need to talk to France about its real problems", he said. (On the Move!) political movement many thought he was doomed to failure.

Upon entering the Elysee, the young president will have to face a divided French society where anti-immigration, and even anti-Muslim, feelings are no longer hidden behind electoral or other excuses.

Putin said, "The citizens of France have entrusted you to lead the country in a period that is hard for Europe and for all of world society". "Today, I'm proud to be French".

Le Pen's "France first", anti-Europe message struck a chord with great swathes of the country.

But he needs to perform well in legislative elections to enact his policies.

EU Council President Donald Tusk said the French had chosen "liberty, equality and fraternity" and "said no to the tyranny of fake news".

However, his challenge remains in energising an increasingly apathetic electorate, for whom his centrist platform offers little else except an alternative to Le Pen.

Her supporters at a National Front election night gathering in Paris put on a courageous face.

"We have the strength, the energy and the will -and we will not give in to fear", he said. Whether the unifying agenda of Macron will work is open to question. She had campaigned to ditch the euro and hold a referendum on European Union membership.

Macron has also said he is determined to develop European defence by coordinating operations and industrial programmes in this area. One of his most risky opponents, conservative former Prime Minister Francois Fillon, was vilified after allegations that his family benefited from cushy taxpayer-funded jobs for years. Fillon is facing charges in the case. Hollande himself decided not to run again.

"Canada and France share a warm and historic relationship, rooted in our common history, deep cultural ties, people-to-people connections, and strong economic partnership", Trudeau said.

"The French have chosen a new president of the republic, and have voted for continuity", she told a rally of voters in eastern Paris.
