Trump says special counsel appointment 'hurts our country'

Irune Rengel | 19 May, 2017, 17:42

I think it divides the country, I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things.

Republicans on Capitol Hill hoped the same, reasoning the appointment of a special counsel could free them to work on a major tax overhaul and other matters without constant distractions.

Graham's remarks came shortly after the Senate met with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel on the Russian Federation investigation Wednesday.

Mr Trump has faced intense backlash for firing Mr Comey on May 9. "There is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign".

White House communications staff initially said the President chose to fire Mr Comey after receiving recommendations from both Mr Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

House investigators said they were plowing full speed ahead with their own inquiry - one source noted that the appointment of a special counsel didn't matter much because Comey had not been providing House investigators much access to begin with.

It is undeniably tough to get on the property ladder these days, and there are many factors that contribute to this. If I bought it once every single day of the year, which no one does , it would cost me about $2,920.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump tweeted, "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

Senators said that Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear that Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, including potentially criminal charges.

Politicians from both parties sought to question him about Mr Trump's firing last week of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, which was followed by news that Mr Trump had shared secrets with the Russians and tried to stop Mr Comey from investigating former presidential adviser Michael Flynn.

"We'll get rid of the smoke and see where the actual issues lie", said Sen.

"I think this is just part of the witch hunt", Trump supporter Tim Steele told MSNBC in a segment filmed from North Carolina.

On Thursday, Rosenstein informed the Senate in a closed-door session about Trump's controversial decision to dump Comey.

Trump last week fired ex-FBI Director James Comey, whose agency was investigating the president's campaign, and reports since then have raised questions about whether he had tried to influence the investigation. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said on Thursday that Rosenstein knew Comey would be fired before writing the recommendation.

Republican Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Flynn's lawyer told the committee he would not honour the panel's subpoena seeking relevant documents.

The justice department announced on Wednesday that Mr Mueller has been given sweeping powers to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, including potential links between Moscow and Trump campaign associates.

Instead of being a popular decision, the firing was met by a tsunami of criticism by Democrats because as FBI director, Comey oversaw the investigation of Russian meddling in the USA election and potential ties to Trump's campaign.

The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said he was supportive of investigations in Congress but expressed concern about the "proliferation" of hearings. "I hope that we don't inadvertently trip up or damage the independent investigation of the special counsel", he said.
