Trump on his alleged ties to Russian Federation: this is greatest witch hunt

McCaskill: Rosenstein said he knew Comey would be fired before memo Trump's circle looking for an outside legal team to boost 'firepower' in Russia probe

Last week, a memo drafted by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was held up by the White House as justification for the firing of Comey, who had been leading the investigation.

Now, Mueller once again finds himself in the midst of historic events: The Justice Department has named him special counsel to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump team during the 2016 presidential election and related matters.

The extraordinary work led former President Barack Obama to ask Mueller to stay two years beyond his 10-year term.

Comey succeeded him, appointed by Obama.

Democratic senators had been prepared to press Rosenstein Thursday to take the step of appointing a special prosecutor, but were left praising him instead before his closed-door briefing began.

Conversations between Mr Flynn and Mr Kislyak accelerated after the Nov 8 vote as the two discussed establishing a back channel for communication between Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that could bypass the United States national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations, said four current American officials.

Comey was "very unpopular with most people", Trump said, adding that he had thought firing him would be more popular among the Democrats, who have accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation director of helping Hillary Clinton lose the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller's appointment has come as Trump fends off reports he shared USA secrets with Russian officials in the Oval Office, and had asked Comey to drop his investigation into former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn.

First reactions from Congress were mainly positive.

He added he wasn't able to ask specifically if it was now a criminal probe "but the takeaway I have is, everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may a criminal investigation". "Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

Graham said that the nature of Mueller's investigation has hurt the Senate's ability to call witnesses in their counter-intelligence probe. And President Richard Nixon resigned after a damning investigation by a select committee, before he could be impeached.

US stocks recovered ground on Thursday as upbeat economic data emboldened investors to return to the market, a day after Wall Street saw the biggest selloff in eight months on worries the political turmoil could undermine Trump initiatives such as tax cuts that investors see as favouring economic growth. In fact the Russian Federation investigation that Trump tried to interfere with is not a witch hunt. He offered to furnish a "record" of the Trump-diplomats meeting in the Oval Office if the White House desired it.

Trump's terse denial followed reports by Reuters and other media about a memo written by Comey alleging that Trump made the request to close down the investigation into Michael Flynn and Russian Federation in February.

In subsequent days, however, Trump acknowledged he'd made a decision to fire Comey even before he read Rosenstein's memo. Stocks rebounded Thursday, with technology and bank shares resuming rallies as data reinforced optimism in the economy.

A day earlier, Mr Trump initially used the appointment to rally his team to unite, move on and refocus on his stalled agenda, said a senior White House official.

In statement released by the White House on Wednesday evening, the President was measured in his response.

McCabe had other matters on his mind, too. The others were former Connecticut Sen.

Trump is leaving town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.

Burr told reporters Thursday about the response from Flynn's lawyer.

McClatchy says Mr Flynn declined to OK a request from Obama officials to approve a military operation involving the IS stronghold of Raqqa, effectively delaying the operation.

The plan was eventually approved by the Trump administration, but not until after Mr Flynn had been fired.
