Assange lawyer says dropped case is'end of nightmare
19 May, 2017, 22:45
Ny stressed that Assange's innocence has not been proven but that the investigation is being terminated because it is no longer possible to pursue it.
He also said the case was politically motivated, as it followed massive Wikileaks dumps of secret U.S. military reports that year. President Donald Trump has said it is "OK" with him if Sessions does that.
Assange had disputed the allegations and argued that he risked being extradited from Sweden to the United States and tried for espionage.
Assange's lawyer Per Samuelson hailed Sweden's decision to drop the investigation as "a total victory for us". "That is not something I can forgive, or forget", he said, maintaining that he had been the victim of a "terrible injustice".
He says his battle is not over, and "the proper war is just commencing".
That's unclear. Assange suspects there is a secret USA indictment against him for WikiLeaks' publication of leaked classified American documents, which has infuriated US officials. "This was a wholly unnecessary delay".
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has suggested that the arrest of Assange could be an American priority, saying last month the US was "stepping up our efforts on all leaks".
"The UK must now grant safe passage to Mr Julian Assange", minister Guillaume Long wrote on Twitter. Long added: "This has gone on long enough".
May 19 British Prime Minister said it would be for police to decide if Julian Assange should be arrested if he leaves the Ecuadorean embassy in London after Swedish prosecutors said on Friday they had dropped a rape investigation against the WikiLeaks.
A lawyer for the woman who alleges she was raped by Julian Assange says "it is a scandal that a suspected rapist can avoid the judicial system and thus avoid a trial in court".
"My client is shocked and no decision to [end the case] can make her change [her view] that Assange exposed her to rape", she said.
Julian Assange's lawyer is asking French president Emmanuel Macron to intervene in support of the WikiLeaks founder.
Assange has been holed up at Ecuador's embassy in London to avoid extradition to answer questions about sex-crime allegations from two women. "He is the only political prisoner in Western Europe". The Swedish High Prosecutor's Office also noted that, under national legislation, the Working Group's opinion had no formal significance for the ongoing preliminary investigation.
"At this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted".
She said the case could be reopened if Assange returns to Sweden before the statute of limitations expires in 2020.
"We've already begun to step up our efforts and whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail", Sessions said last month. "My assessment is the transfer can not be carried out in a foreseeable future". British police arrested him in London months later.
The Metropolitan police in London said Assange would also face immediate arrest for breaching his bail conditions; a warrant was issued when he failed to attend a magistrates court after entering the embassy, according to the Guardian.
It added that while Assange was wanted on a European Arrest Warrant for an "extremely serious offence", the MPS response reflected the "serious nature of that crime".
British police kept up a round-the-clock guard outside the embassy until December 2015, when the operation was scaled back partly because of the costs, which had exceeded 11 million pounds (over $17.5 million at the time).
Assange is wanted by British police for extradition to Sweden.
Even with the comments from United Kingdom authorities, Per Samuelson, Assange's Swedish lawyer, described the decision as a victory, says the Guardian.
After the Swedish announcement.
Sweden's director of public prosecution, Marianne Ny, filed a request to the Stockholm District Court to revoke Assange's arrest warrant that was issued seven years ago.
The 45-year-old Australian has always denied the allegations, which he feared would see him extradited to the United States and put on trial over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. military and diplomatic documents. He said the day marked an "important victory", but noted that he still could be prosecuted by the United States.
