Marcus Hutchins the 22 year old from south-west England found and inadvertently activated a "kill switch" in the malicious software that wreaked havoc on organisations including the UK's National Health Service on Friday, by registering a specific domain name hidden within the program for just $10.69 or Rs 684.32.
Attacks have been recorded in at least 150 countries, including the UK, Russia, Ukraine, India, China, Italy, and Egypt. Europe and Russia have been the hardest hit so far.
Speaking to the Associated Press, he said: "I've had people, sort of inundating me with messages thanking me, saying that I'm a hero".
"My job is to look for ways we can track and potentially stop botnets (and other kinds of malware), so I'm always on the lookout to pick up unregistered malware control server (C2) domains", Hutchins noted on his blog.
Salim Neino, chief executive of Kryptos Logic, said Mr Hutchins took over the "kill switch" on Friday afternoon European time, before it could fully affect the United States.
ILFRACOMBE, England (AP) - As a vast "ransomware" attack raced from computer to computer, infecting tens of thousands around the world, a young tech expert worked from his bedroom in England to bring the rampage to a halt.
WannaCry proved to be a new type of cyber threat in that it not only compromised users' computer files but held them for ransom - up to as much as $600 - or the files would be irreparably damaged.
Then he registered it, which seemed to stop it spreading.
Marcus - who goes by the online moniker MalwareTech - told MailOnline: "I'm not so anxious with emails, it's supposedly that this ransomware actually drops a back door and we don't know yet if our fix kills the backdoor as well".
Neino said the worm was "poorly designed" - patched together and a "sum of different parts" with an unsophisticated payment system.
Hutchins is part of a global community of cyber guards who patrol the Internet for cybercrime and try to thwart it before anyone is victimized.
It is not uncommon for members to use aliases, to protect from retaliatory attacks and ensure privacy. He said: "Please if you want an interview that badly, DM me". But he realises his newfound fame will mean an end to the anonymity.
And now Marcus has said he is working with the National Cyber Security Centre amid fears the chaos will return when Brits turn on their computers after the weekend.
Hutchins' mother Janet, a nurse, couldn't be prouder - and was happy to have the veil of anonymity lifted.
It is likely to be a big adjustment. They handed me some papers which showed I was online at the time and chatting with my friends on the school network. Hutchins lives with his family in this seaside town, where he works out of his bedroom on a sophisticated computer setup with three enormous screens.
