Boston's struggles led to some complaints to the officials from star guard Isaiah Thomas.
Washington Wizards guard John Wall (2) fights for a loose ball against Boston Celtics players during the first half in Game 3 of a second-round NBA playoff series basketball game, Thursday, May 4, 2017, in Washington. The game featured plenty of emotion and physicality and Kelly Oubre Jr. managed to get himself ejected after bumping Kelly Olynyk of the Celtics.
The team said in a statement that Thomas had two other damaged teeth that required "extensive oral surgery to stabilize".
After Boston scored the first five points of the second half to lead 53-48, the fun began.
John Wall started the game shooting 0-for-9 and he found himself on the bench next to Coach Scott Brooks unusually early-at the 3:00 mark of the first quarter to be exact.
The Celtics did their job in making sure the Wizards did not steal a game in Boston, giving them the kind of control a team needs to win a series.
Well, give the Celtics this much: They waited a full half before they allowed the Wizards to crush them. "They set the tone". Thomas also led the league with 12.6 drives per game during the regular season and ranks second behind Houston's James Harden with 13.2 drives per game during the playoffs. Green checked in during Boston's disastrous third quarter.
In the first three games against the Wizards, the Celtics have allowed 38 or more each time.
"Our goal is just take him out of the game and just continue to be physical with him", Beal said.
"It's just been a lot of hard fouls that you're used to seeing back in the old days' playoffs", Wall said.
The Celtics are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games, 7-18 ATS in their last 25 games playing on 2 days rest and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. "We understood what we had to do and we were locked in". We'll make the adjustments as a team, I'll watch film, I'll make the adjustments myself and see where I can pick them apart. "When you keep getting hit in the head, you might respond that way and I think that's what (Kelly) did".
Tensions boiled over in a contentious, technical foul-filled Game 3 Thursday night as the Wizards rode another hot start to a 116-89 victory that cut their series deficit to 2-1. Eight technical fouls were called in that game along with Oubre's flagrant-2 foul.
Washington coasted in the fourth period with great rebounding and defense. The first two were wide open, the second was mildly contested, but all three swished through the net, and it looked like the Celtics had figured out the Wizards' puzzle.
San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol, right, shoots as Houston Rockets guard Patrick Beverley defends during the first half in Game 4 of an NBA basketball second-round playoff series, Sunday, May 7, 2017, in Houston. Draymond Green knocked down five three-pointers and finished with 21 points as the Warriors won 115-104 and have a two games to none lead in the series. The Wizards have the intensity that Boston seems to be lacking, especially at home. But in game four of what's felt like more like a forty game series there were finally no batters hit by a pitch, no ejections, and we hope, no racial slurs hurled by awful people from the stands of Fenway Park.
The Celtics were led by Isaiah Thomas scoring 19 points.
