Paris attack: Police officer shot dead, another wounded, Champs Elysees closed off

Galeno Paniagua | 22 Abril, 2017, 12:13

One police officer is dead and another hurt following a shooting in the French capital, police sources say.

During a search of his home, Belgian police found weapons, balaclavas and a train ticket for France departing Thursday morning, hours before the Paris assault.

It is the third deadly attack against French security this year.

Steve White, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "Once again the police family is in mourning and it serves to underline how fearless officers are putting their life on the line day in and day out to protect the public".

Shortly before midnight, the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization claimed the attack, saying it was carried out by someone called "Abu Yusuf al Beljiki", or "the Belgian".

IS has said it was behind the attack.

He played on the football team at Brigham Young University, a school where he converted to both the Mormon faith and the GOP. Chaffetz proudly refused to use campaign funds to feed state delegates, as is traditional in the process of currying favor.

"This kind of terrorism is an attack on the entire civilized world, and we resolutely condemn it", Abe said in the message, released by the Foreign Ministry.

French police are also hunting for a man who has been identified by Belgian security services, an interior ministry spokesman says.

A second suspect thought to be involved in the incident on the Champs Elysees shopping boulevard just days ahead of France's presidential election was still on the loose.

The Paris prosecutor said his office had opened a terrorism investigation.

The attacker had been flagged as an extremist, according to two police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the investigation. Subway stations were closed off.

Police and soldiers sealed off the area, ordering tourists back into their hotels and blocking people from approaching the scene.

Paris shooting: second man sought by police
With a record number of voters still undecided, analysts say the shooting could play into the narrative pushed by the far-right. The attack overshadowed the final day of campaigning for the first round of the French election, which takes place on Sunday.

The gunfire sent scores of tourists fleeing into side streets.

"They were running, running", said 55-year-old Badi Ftaïti, who lives in the area. The shooting unfolded as all 11 presidential contenders were being interviewed on state television.

"The Prime Minister has tonight passed on her condolences to President Hollande".

"Last night's attack on Paris could have a massive influence on the political front, not only in France but also in the United Kingdom which is also preparing to head to the polls", said Naeem Aslam, Chief Market Analyst at Think Markets.

Two of the main candidates, conservative Francois Fillon and centrist Emmanuel Macron, cancelled planned campaign stops on Friday.

Concerns over security have been raised since Tuesday when two men were arrested for plotting an attack before the French presidential election, which is set to begin on Sunday.
