Amnesty International warned of the repression of rights and UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres urged "concrete gestures from all sided to reduce the polarization".

The opposition says the court's move was tantamount to a coup and is asking for the removal of the justices, the release of political prisoners and, crucially, general elections.

The automaker suspended operations at its Valencia, Venezuela, plant in December due to slumping sales.

Several dozen employees, in baseball hats and blue shirts adorned with the GM and Cadillac logos, gathered by the plant's main gates in the city of Valencia on Thursday.

Maduro has been accused by the opposition of behaving like a dictator.

His government seized General Motors' assembly plant in Venezuela on Wednesday amid the protests demanding a new presidential election and calling for an end to the economic chaos that has produced shortages of food and medicine as well as soaring inflation.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., took a stronger stance Thursday against the Venezuelan government.

"I denounce before the worldwide community that armed gangs hired by the opposition attacked a maternity hospital with 54 children", Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez tweeted, noting that President Nicolas Maduro had ordered the hospital's evacuation.

He said US and other foreign companies operating in Venezuela "should have no illusions about the risks of doing business under the current regime".

Rascon also highlighted the corresponding protests here at home, saying: "Thousands from Miami to Houston marched in solidarity".

Photos and videos of the man have flooded Venezuelan social media.

The lawsuit was brought by a former GM dealership in western Venezuela.

The State Department said Thursday that it was reviewing details of the GM case and called on authorities to act swiftly and transparently to resolve the dispute.

While the seizure is no surprise, GM's continued presence in Venezuela is.

That sets the stage for prolonged disruption in volatile Venezuela, where security forces have been blocking rallies this month and protests have dissolved into clashes with rock-throwing youth.

Oil accounts for 96 percent of Venezuela's export earnings and the plunge in world oil prices hit the government hard, leaving it owing money across the board, from foreign airlines to oil service companies.

Meanwhile, a string of countries and social movements voiced solidarity with the Venezuelan government in the face of opposition efforts to oust the elected president.

Bolivian President Evo Morales likewise slammed the US-led push for worldwide intervention in Venezuela.

"[GM] strongly rejects the arbitrary measures taken by the authorities and will vigorously take all legal actions, within and outside of Venezuela, to defend its rights", it said in a statement.

The minister also blamed right-wing governments for the violence, "The small group of governments that have expressed their public support for the Venezuelan opposition has encouraged this vandalism and extreme violence".

GM's subsidiary in the country - General Motors Venezolana - has operated in Venezuela for almost 70 years.

The ruling found similar discrimination in five other counties across the state: Dallas, Bexar, el Paso, Nueces, and bell. The panel included two Republican appointees.

The third fatality was a National Guard sergeant killed overnight when his squad was attacked with gunfire while trying to control disturbances in a suburb of Caracas, the chief prosecutor's office said. At least four people have been killed in the protests.
