US 'armada' headed away from N Korea

Galeno Paniagua | 21 Abril, 2017, 19:22

This contradicts earlier announcements by US authorities that the supercarrier strike group was heading towards the Korean Peninsula amid possibilities of North Korean provocations. White House officials said a sequence of communication miscues with the Defense Department were to blame for the mix-up. The military maneuver, announced days earlier by Admiral Harry Harris, was apparently intended "to maintain readiness" in advance of North Korea's anniversary celebration last weekend, during which Kim Jong-un was expected to conduct his sixth nuclear weapons test.

President Donald Trump last week said he had sent "an armada - very powerful" to North Korea to send a message about American resolve and intent.

"I think when you see a carrier group steaming into an area like that, the forward presence of that is clearly, through nearly every instance, a huge deterrence", he said, saying earlier that the strike force "gives the President options in the region".

On April 11, White House press secretary Sean Spicer didn't dispute the characterization that the strike group was "steaming up toward the sea of Japan".

Abe said Japan likewise hopes for peaceful dialogue with Pyongyang, "but at the same time, dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless".

Officials in the Trump administration cited a premature announcement from the military's Pacific Command, in addition to an erroneous statement made by Secretary Jim Mattis, to explain the confusion.

Joel Wit, a co-founder of the 38 North programme of the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, said to AP: "If you are going to threaten the North Koreans, you better make sure your threat is credible".

According to The New York Times, the naval armada has now changed its course and will arrive at the Korean Peninsula by the end of April.

Despite the embarrassing revelation, United States vice president Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the resolve of America's military, promising it would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons.

Paris attack could influence undecided voters in presidential election
The warning was circulated more widely among French security services in the hour following the Champs Elysees attack. The Champs Elysees street was closed off shortly after the shooting, while a helicopter started patrolling the area.

"But at the same time", Abe added, "dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue".

The France-based AFP also reported that the Carl Vinson was in waters northwest of Australia as of Monday and about to move toward seas near South Korea within the next 24 hours.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its strike group actually sailed south after U.S. Every president has done it. Trump, however, has brought it to new levels of irrelevant theater.

U.S. says Iran could become another North Korea if left 'unchecked'
Tehran would nearly certainly accuse the Trump administration of non-compliance and might eventually decide to withdraw. However, the United States admitted that Tehran was complying with the 2015 agreement, the BBC said.
