France's presidential candidates have expressed solidarity with police forces following the shooting of three officers in Paris, leaving one dead and two gravely wounded, as the Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Pierre-Henry Brandet, a spokesperson for the French Interior Ministry, refuted reports of two police officers dying in the incident.

Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said on BFM television that a man came out of a auto and opened fire on a police vehicle.

Meanwhile, as France's elite anti-terrorism took control of the crime scene and searched the shooter's vehicle for possible explosives dozens of police officers kept the curious away.

"The area is unsafe because of shooting", a police officer yelled at reporters in English.

The shooting comes three days before the first round of France's presidential elections.

CNN's Paris bureau is witnessing a large police operation in the area.

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told The Associated Press that the attacker appeared to be acting alone.
