It seems that the first casualty of the NHL's decision to withhold players from the 2018 Winter Olympics will be defenseman Nikita Tryamkin of the Vancouver Canucks.
News first broke of Tryamkin's departure on Wednesday, with the Canucks officially acknowledging his decision Thursday morning. More importantly for Tryamkin, though, it gives the 6-f00t-7 defenseman a chance to snag an Olympic spot left vacant by the NHL's refusal to loan players to the worldwide tournament. "But for now he is home and we will move ahead with building this team with other young players". This past year, he put up two goals and nine points in 66 regular season games, skating out for nearly 17 minutes a night.
The six-foot-seven, 265-pound Tryamkin was drafted by Vancouver in the third round, 66th overall, in 2014 and signed in March 2016 after Yekaterinburg Automobilis was eliminated from the KHL playoffs.
Tryamkin played with Yekaterinburg Automobilist for four seasons from 2012 to 2016 prior to joining the Canucks. The Canucks will maintain Tryamkin's National Hockey League rights should he decide to return to North America.
He left the KHL last season to join the Canucks, where he played in 13 games.
