US President Donald Trump, hammering his "America First" campaign theme, signedan executive order that he said would favour American companies for federal contracts and tighten the H-1B visa programme for foreign technical workers.
But IT professional Darshan Srinivasan, who has visited the United States and other countries for onsite projects, said the order has come as a blow to workers in the sector.
President Trump signed the order during an event at the headquarters of Snap-on, a Kenosha, Wis. -based manufacturer of professional tools and equipment.
The loss of the H-1B program could also have an impact on the country's economy, as employers may be unable to fill coveted positions with applicants who possess the right work history and education.
He said his organization will enforce "Hire American" decides that are meant to secure occupations and wages of specialists in the United States.
"We believe the American strength is rooted in the ability to make things and fix things", he explained. Trump said at the signing.
"I know he won't because he made a promise he's going to fix this for the hard working men and women, and we can't bankrupt the middle class of this country to give them insurance in name only", Trump Jr. said.
Yet in a briefing paper given to reporters, the White House says such critics fail "to take into account" that helping American contractors would boost American incomes, raise tax revenue and help revive US industry. However, as per studies, 80 for every penny of the endorsed applications were for the two least wage levels permitted.
It directs federal agencies to propose reforms to the H-1B program that prevents the displacement of American workers.
There have been several bills introduced in recent months to reform the H-1B visa system, including a bipartisan bill from Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin who have been pushing to revamp the program for years.
Government data released this week, meanwhile, shows that the number of applicants for H-1B visas has fallen. India says the review should take into account the needs of American companies.
The number of requests for H-1B visas declined this year by about 15 percent, or roughly 37,000 applications, but the total was still almost 200,000, far more than the 85,000 limit.

Yet another study showed that artificial sweeteners alter bacteria in the gut, which might also have a negative effect, Pase said. Notably, data collection did not distinguish between the types of artificial sweeteners used in the beverages.
If you're looking to bring in foreign workers to shore up any skills gaps in your organization, the H-1B program could be what you're looking for.
The $150-billion Indian outsourcing industry has been bracing for drastic changes in the H-1B visa programme, the most favoured route to send Indian engineers to the U.S., which allowed IT services firms to keep costs low and gain an advantage over global competitors.
Much like some prior orders, however, Trump's executive action Tuesday essentially looks for detailed reports rather than making decisive changes.
Lottery funds more than 65,000 H1-B applications each year with another 20,000 handed out to graduate student workers.
Laws requiring the use of USA -sourced goods and services for government contracts would be bolstered by an executive order issued April 18 by President Donald Trump. "A company can't stake something as critical as their hiring and growth plan on something they only have a one in three chance of getting". "There's a skills shortage in the USA, and we have incredibly talented people being educated here; why send them home?"
