Trump Hails Xi Push on North Korea, Backs Off on Currency Gripe

"We're reviewing all of our trade agreements across the world to ensure that they benefit our economy as much as they benefit our trading partners", Pence told the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea.

"The time really has come for North Korea to get the message".

The comments were made alongside South Korea's acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn on Monday after a visit to the "Demilitarized Zone" located between the north and the south where 28,500 USA troops are stationed.

Pence made an unannounced visit to the Demilitarized Zone at the start of his 10-day trip to Asia in a USA show of force that allowed the vice president to gaze at North Korean soldiers from afar and stare directly across a border marked by razor wire.

As the bomber jacket-clad Mr Pence was briefed near the military demarcation line, two North Korean soldiers watched from a short distance away, one taking multiple photographs of the American visitor.

But a missile test-launched on Sunday exploded shortly after takeoff, and a widely anticipated sixth nuclear test never materialized.

This article is based on a larger analysis of the prospects of nuclear fallout with North Korea published April 14.

"North Korea would do well not to test his resolve or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region", Pence said.

"If the U.S. is reckless enough to use military means it would mean from that very day, an all out war".

Britain's former Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind told the BBC "there is a very strong belief that the USA - through cyber methods - has been successful on several occasions in interrupting these sorts of tests and making them fail".

Meanwhile, China made a plea for a return to negotiations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China conducts "normal" business with its neighbour North Korea while adhering to sanctions imposed beginning in 2006 by the U.N. Security Council.

Asked about possible talks with the North, she said, "I think there is a feeling that the time - the conditions are not really ripe for any kind of talks until North Korea shows that it is serious about what would be accomplished by undertaking such talks".

In talks with Aso, Pence was expected "to push for greater access to Japan's markets for U.S. companies, and for more Japanese investment in the U.S.", Anthony says. He said the USA and its allies would deal with the situation "through peaceable means or ultimately by whatever means are necessary".

Russian Federation had blocked an earlier version of the statement - which comes after North Korea carried out a failed test on Sunday - even though China, Pyongyang's ally, had expressed its support for it.

Sunday's launch failure led some observers to speculate that USA hacking efforts might have played a role. -South Korean military camp, which is just outside the 2.5-mile (4.02-kilometer)-wide DMZ.
