Support for marijuana legalization is at an all-time high

Irune Rengel | 21 Abril, 2017, 19:59

At the same time, the federal government has threatened to enforce federal drug laws against states where marijuana use is legal.

According to a new CBS poll a full 61 percent of the country, when asked, responded that marijuana should be legal.

The poll's results put support for legal weed up five percent from 2016, when 56 percent supported it, a 21 percent from 2011 - it had a mere 40 percent support back then.

The poll showed 94 percent of people approve the use of pot for medical use.

5 takeaways from Patriots' 2017 schedule release
The Patriots will host the Falcons in Week 7 on Monday morning, October 23 at 1.30am in a rematch of Super Bowl LI. Given its relatively late position on the schedule, this game could carry significant playoff implications.

That marks a five-percent increase over a year ago and the highest percentage ever recorded since CBS began asking the question.

Lauren McDowell, a 32-year-old who started using marijuana to treat pain after a 2014 auto accident, agrees it makes no sense to criminalize pot for more than another year.

About two-thirds, of 65 percent, of respondents further said they believe marijuana is less risky than most other drugs and 53 percent said they believe alcohol is more harmful to a person's health than pot.

Brohl, who heads Colorado's Department of Revenue, said there are about 3,000 licensed marijuana businesses in her state, about half medical and half recreational.

Further, 71% of Americans oppose a federal crackdown on state-legal marijuana, with a relatively even split between Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. This figure is reportedly independent of political affiliation, as opposition to federal meddling comes from most Republicans, Democrats, and independents.

Sessions talked more recently about his views at the National Association of Attorneys General winter meeting in February, when he said that he's "dubious" about marijuana. "States can pass whatever laws they choose, but I'm not sure we're going to be a better, healthier nation if we have marijuana being sold at every corner store". Over three quarters of those 18 to 34 favor legalization, while around 60% of those 35 to 64 do. Seniors aged 65 and older remain the only group for whom a majority believe marijuana use should be illegal.

"The people have been pretty clear that this is something they don't want the federal government to interfere with", said Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer of OR, one of the signees and sponsor of the amendment, during a press call Wednesday. Most are male and under 65.

CBS surveyed 1,011 adults between April 11 and April 15, using live interviewers to reach both landlines and cell phones. The data have been weighted to reflect U.S. Census figures on demographic variables. The error for subgroups may be higher and is available by request.
