Georgia's 6th District Special Election Results: Democrats try to turn a House seat blue
21 Abril, 2017, 19:42
President Trump took credit for helping to block Democrat John Ossoff from getting an outright win in a congressional special election in Georgia. Trump had criticized Ossoff in the days leading up to the race and tweeted after the results were in.
The commercial, combined with an anti-Ossoff ad Wednesday from a GOP group, are a sign of what's to come. The government is funded through April 28. Ossoff, who grew up in the district, says he will move back if he wins.
"If you run as a Democrat, you're a Democrat", Sanders said. "Glad to be of help!" the president tweeted, pointing to the large sums of money raised by donors outside the state of Georgia.
The Georgia congressional seat is attracting so much attention also because it has been the Republicans' since the late 1970s - and a candidate as strong as Ossoff is definitely a threat to them.
If this is the Republican Party's secret weapon in keeping control of this hotly contested seat in Georgia, then they're in big trouble.
CAMEROTA: I mean, very quickly, President Trump only won there by one percentage point.
Ossoff attempted to make the special election all about Trump.
"We want everybody who is supportive of Republicans, so absolutely", Handel told The Associated Press after taking a congratulatory call from Trump Wednesday morning. Republican Karen Handel, 55, a former Georgia secretary of state, won 19.8 percent, and will face Ossoff in the June 20 runoff. The party avoided embarrassment last week when it narrowly held a conservative Kansas seat vacated when Trump tapped Republican Representative Mike Pompeo to head the Central Intelligence Agency. But for a first high-profile test of polling since the 2016 election, when surveys underestimated Donald Trump's support, Georgia 6 is not consistent with the idea that polling is broken, or that polls are systematically missing Republican support.
Sanders urges Democrats to reach out to Trump supporters
House special election in Georgia could see Democrat Jon Ossoff come out with the most votes against several Republican rivals. He often focused on income inequality during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination previous year .
But his candidacy became a sensation among liberal activists nationwide, who helped Ossoff raise more than $8 million in only two months - an astounding sum that helped him become an early front-runner in the race.
Having already endured several million in attacks from national Republican outfits, Ossoff said he's ready for more.
"They were ringing my phone off the hook", said Kim Fambro, 45, who said the outreach convinced her to vote for Ossoff.
Republicans have made their own attempts at nationalizing the campaign.
