Rep. Jason Chaffetz will not seek re-election

Montez Delgado | 21 Abril, 2017, 18:10

Chaffetz, who has served several terms in Congress, said he chose to announce his decision now to give other candidates the proper time period to build a successful campaign.

In a statement on Facebook, Chaffetz noted that he has long advocated that public service should be for a limited time. I preach that you want to get in, serve and get out.

"I may run again for public office, but not in 2018", he wrote.

"Chaffetz not seeking re-election will raise more questions about this", Watson tweeted, quoting another tweet that suggested the Russians have "kompromat" against Chaffetz. Even senior GOP strategists in Utah, who spoke to Heat Street, say they were surprised by the news, finding out Wednesday morning when Chaffetz took to social media.

Or maybe it's something that has nothing to do with any of that!

An aide to another Utah lawmaker told DailyMail.com on Thursday afternoon: "'I'm hearing Jason will make an announcement tomorrow but I don't know what it's about".

As political site Red State mentioned, these URLs offer more evidence that a White House run is a possibility. But Chaffetz has been reluctant do so, despite getting an earful from his constituents during a February town hall meeting.

"The Utah Republican was first elected in 2008, and has since become the chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee". Hatch told CNN last month that he will seek another term next year rather than retire.

Chaffetz said he "made a personal decision to return to the private sector" and said he has "no ulterior motives" for walking away from Congress.

"After seeing his district and his state first-hand, I can certainly understand why it is calling him back", Oversight Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, said of Chaffetz's decision to not seek re-election in a statement yesterday.

"He finds himself in this no-win situation in DC", longtime Salt Lake Tribune political reporter Robert Gehrke told me in an email Wednesday.

There has been speculation that McMullin planned to challenge Chaffetz for his seat in 2018. However, in the wake of Donald Trump's election, that tide may have been turning. Chaffetz has come under pressure, mostly from Democrats, to investigate the Trump administration, including Russia's involvement in the presidential election.

Smith, for one, seems certain the case is headed for yet another appeal, ending his dissent with the words "Stay tuned". Texas also has sought to eliminate straight-ticket voting, one of just 10 states still allowing the practice.

In a message on his Facebook page, Chaffetz thanked supporters and announced he will "not be a candidate for any office in 2018". If Chaffetz leaves, the state will have to scramble to create a system to replace his seat.
