Parliament approves Prime Minister Theresa May's General Election call

General Election 2017: What the polls are predicting Could Lib Dems save us from a One Party State?

Yesterday (Tuesday), UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced that she would ask the House of Commons to approve snap elections.

Three weekend opinion polls put the Conservatives about 20 points ahead of Labour, while Britain second female prime minister also has strong personal support. "That's what I believe in doing, that's what I'm going to be doing around this campaign".

Prime Minister Theresa May chided opposition leaders for trying to join hands, and insisted she and her Conservative Party alone could get the best Brexit deal for Britain.

Praising MPs for backing her during a stump speech in the north-west of England, the PM said: "It's great to be here in Bolton, fresh from the House of Commons, fresh from winning a vote in the House of Commons, which has approved my decision to hold a general election on June 8".

"That would be in nobody's interest", May said.

She portrayed the election as a choice between five years of stability and strong leadership under the Conservatives and a "coalition of chaos" under Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, propped up by the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party (SNP). Its lawmakers abstained during Wednesday's vote.

Political pundits in Britain are also attributing the move as a direct attack on a weakened Opposition, the Labour party under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

According to those predictions, the Conservatives are on course to gain the strong mandate that May seeks in order to push her Brexit agenda through parliament.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

But after ITV confirmed it would host a leaders' debate and a senior BBC journalist said the corporation would not let a single politician stop a programme which was in the public interest, it is understood that Mrs May is now open to the idea of a Q&A session.

The Liberal Democrats won a ninth seat in parliament in a by-election in Richmond in December.

May dismissed criticism of her decision to call voters back to polling booths for the third time in just over 24 months.

Several MPs across parties announced their decision not to contest the election, including former chancellor George Osborne, recently appointed editor of the mass circulation Evening Standard.

The smaller Liberal Democrats, who lost most of their seats in 2015 after entering coalition with the Conservatives, are hoping to capitalise on their strong support for the European Union to win new support. "It's about ... getting the right deal from Europe", May said.

Leaders of European Union states are due to adopt negotiating guidelines at an April 29 summit, and the bloc will prepare detailed plans for the talks with Britain by late May.

Critics of an early election accuse May of taking advantage of low ratings for the main opposition Labour Party.

"What the British people - what the people of the United Kingdom - voted for past year was for the UK to leave the European Union".

Liberal Democrat leader Farron said that broadcasters should hold debates anyway, with an empty chair in May's place.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that if the "parliamentary arithmetic" supported it she would form a "progressive alliance" to keep Prime Minister Theresa May from returning to power.
