U.S. Vice President Mike Pence declared Monday the "era of strategic patience is over" with North Korea, expressing impatience with the speed and willingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

At a major military parade to mark the "Day of the Sun" Saturday, Pyongyang showed off a bevy of new missiles and launchers.

The trip comes at a critical moment for the Trump administration and USA allies, after escalated posturing from North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and growing concerns that the country may mark its most important holiday on Saturday with its sixth nuclear test.

"The message of the people of the United States of America is that we seek peace, but America has always sought peace through strength and my message here today standing with U.S. forces Korea, standing with courageous soldiers from the Republic of Korea is a message of resolve". And it comes at a time of high tensions between the USA and North Korea.

In meetings with South Korean leaders, officials say the vice president is prepared to discuss sanctions if the topic is raised. The highlight of Pence's three-day visit will come on day two when he's due to meet with South Korea's Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn.

North Korea's vice foreign minister says it will conduct its next nuclear test whenever its supreme headquarters sees fit.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence visits with troops at Camp Bonifas, just south of the DMZ. In the past, North Korea showed off mock-up missiles and then later succeeded in test-firing real ones on several occasions. Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

And, in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, President Trump said he would be willing to make concessions on trade with China in exchange for their help deterring North Korea. 'Obviously, in our commitment to the Republic of Korea, we consult with them as well - those discussions, as part of the broader assessment with the National Security Council, so we wouldn't get into the weeds in the military setting'.

Han cited Trump's tweets as problematic, as well as the US military's participation in exercises with South Korea and an aircraft carrier's move to the region.

And the USA is prepared for North Korea to do a possible test even this weekend.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have ratcheted up in recent weeks, amid tit-for-tat saber-rattling from the U.S. and North Korea. The country launched a long-range rocket and conducted the two nuclear tests past year, including its most powerful to date.

As if North Korea was conscious of the strong posture of these two nations, it did not dare to conduct the sixth nuclear test or launch an ICBM.

Kim has overseen three nuclear tests and a string of missile and rocket launches since taking over after the death of his father, dictator Kim Jong Il, in late 2011. Though the test ended in failure, as the missile exploded right after its launch, North Korea carried out the missile test in spite of USA and Chinese protests.

If North Korea has ICBMs, it could give it the ability to strike targets in the mainland United States and Europe.

Despite Sunday's failure, the North's previous claim to have used "standardized" warheads has led to worries that it was making headway in its push to develop small and sophisticated warheads to be topped on long-range missiles.

Earlier this week, United States President Donald Trump pledged to "take care of" the North Korean "problem".

Washington sees North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to world security and to its Asian allies, Japan and South Korea.
