Venezuelan opposition leader and Governor of Miranda State Henrique Capriles tries to catch his breath after being affected by tear gas while participating in the so-called "mother of all marches" against Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas on April 19, 2017.

Tens of thousands of opponents of President Nicolas Maduro flood the streets of Caracas in what's been dubbed the "mother of all marches".

Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets in protest again today. He was shot in the head, they said, and three security officials said he later died in a clinic after undergoing surgery.

"We are concerned about that situation". By doing away with the opposition-controlled legislative branch, the move effectively meant the remaining two branches of Venezuelan government were controlled by the ruling United Socialist Party.

The public prosecutor's office has called for an investigation into the shooting.

Clashes were reported across the country during the most sustained protests since 2014.

Alan Johnson to stand down at General Election
In a letter to his constituents, the former home secretary said he would not be standing as a candidate in his Hull West and Hessle constituency.

"We will advance towards the organization and training of one million organized militiamen, trained and armed to defend peace, sovereignty, and the independence of the nation", Maduro reportedly said.

Since then, people have been protesting for the removal of the Supreme Court Justices, the reinstatement of gubernatorial and local elections, the release of the political prisoners and ultimately, Maduro's resignation.

Opposition leaders also accuse the government of infiltrating marches with violent protesters as a way of discrediting them. But it had the added effect of energizing Venezuela's fractious opposition, which had been struggling to channel growing disgust with Maduro over widespread food shortages, triple-digit inflation and rampant crime.

Some unhappy Venezuelans also steer clear of protests, fearful of violence, cynical that marches can bring about change, or too busy looking for food amid the recession.

He didn't provide any evidence to back up the coup claims, and the opposition rejected them as desperate attempt to intimidate Venezuelans from exercising their constitutional right to protest.

He said the opposition did not only stage protests in the east of the city, as it normally does, but also in typically pro-government western areas.

The opposition is demanding a timeline for delayed elections, a halt a security crackdown on protests, and respect for the autonomy of the opposition-led legislature.

"We want to get out of all this oppression and dictatorship, all the mistreatment we have had - the hunger, the kids dying in the countryside, the poverty", another protester, an unemployed school teacher named Libertad Diaz, told Phil.

Liliana Machuca, a teacher in Caracas told the AP she believes protesting is her only option after all the "abuses" she says have been committed by the government. Officially known as the Venezuelan National Bolivarian Militia, it is a branch of the National Armed Forces of Venezuela created by the late President Hugo Chavez.

New administrations in Argentina, Brazil, and Peru notably started speaking up more about Venezuela in the a year ago, in particular calling for the government to restore democratic order and hold regional elections.

The United States is closely watching the political situation in Venezuela and is anxious the government of President Nicolas Maduro is working to silence the opposition, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Wednesday.
