They asked Cook County Judge Franklin Valderrama for a prompt ruling at Wednesday's hearing, although it's unclear how such a ruling would help keep CPS afloat financially.

They also said imposing a requirement that Chicago's school system receive a bigger slice of the funding pie with regard to teacher pensions would impose financial harm on districts outside the city that are not involved in the lawsuit.

A lawsuit filed by the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) against the state of IL seeking to invalidate the state's school-funding system made its first appearance in a courtroom, where lawyers for the nation's third-largest school system sought a temporary injunction on the disbursement of any new education dollars throughout the state.

NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament To Return To Hartford
The state of CT will play host to several prominent events in that time frame, most notably in women's hockey and men's lacrosse. The XL Center last hosted NCAA men's tournament games 1998 and previously hosted in 1983, 1985, 1988 and 1990.

Attorneys for the families suing the state want the judge to issue an injunction that would stop the state from distributing funds in what they call a discriminating manner. He said the judge has the power to end the discriminatory practice, but the state would determine how it would fix the disparity.

Without more than $250 million in state funding it was counting on, CPS says, it could be forced to end classes this year on June 1 instead of the 20.

"As a parent, I will volunteer to keep my school open with other parents to keep kids safe", she said. CPS is suing IL and Gov. Bruce Rauner, alleging discriminatory funding. "The Illinois Civil Rights Act is clear, you can not discriminate on the basis of race". The judge's decision will come April 28. He said the state has even conceded the discrimination contended in the suit.

"Minority children, poor children across the state of IL, because of the funding formula, are treated as second class citizens", Emanuel said. Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35) talked about the Corporate Head Tax, which he introduced on Wednesday, with an estimated annual revenue potential of $94 million. The rest of the state is predominantly white.

Purvis dismissed the district's claims of discrimination.
