Bill O'Reilly, who has been ousted from his top-rated TV show on Fox News over allegations of sexual harassment, will receive nearly US$25 million (NZ$36m) for agreeing to leave the company, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Ratings for "The Factor", formerly "The O'Reilly Factor", were up considerably on Wednesday night in the wake of the announcement that host Bill O'Reilly has been fired by Fox News.
But pressure mounted on the company to take action after a New York Times investigation found that O'Reilly and the company had reached settlements with five women who had complained about sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior by him.
O'Reilly issued a statement on Wednesday after the news of his departure was announced, saying, "It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims". According to Politico's Joe Pompeo who saw an April 18 email exchange between O'Reilly and his representatives, O'Reilly is said to have wrote, "If we show to Fox tomorrow, word will get out and the Thursday call may be cancelled". Yet even as Fox gave up on O'Reilly, it sent him off with a reported $25 million severance package.
The women either worked for O'Reilly or appeared as guests on his programme.

"If somebody else came forward against those people I can do it too, '" Siri said. It went on to say that his lawyers had uncovered "evidence that the smear campaign is being orchestrated by far-left organizations bent on destroying O'Reilly for political and financial reasons", and this "irrefutable" evidence would be "put forth shortly".
