CBS Omits GM Factory Being Seized by Socialist Venezuela

VENEZUELA Thousands took part in protests Wednesday against president Nicolas Maduro including in Caracas
Irune Rengel | 21 Abril, 2017, 20:01

Last summer, the Maduro government seized a plant owned by U.S. personal care giant Kimberly-Clark Corp, renamed it after local indigenous warrior known for battling Spanish colonial authorities, and declared the facility to be reborn "in the hands of the workers". Last May, tire maker Bridgestone sold its business there after six decades of operating in the country. Remaining in Venezuela means continued losses, while leaving the country would mean investing from scratch should government policies become more favorable.

The government has blocked their attempts to remove Maduro from power by a referendum vote, and it has also delayed local and state elections.

Maduro has said he has authorized formal claims to be brought against Capriles for wrongly accusing the government of killing university student Paolo Ramirez in the restive Tachira State near Colombia on Wednesday.

In recent years under President Nicolás Maduro, the government has seized bakeries amidst a bread shortage, taken over toilet paper factories amid a toilet paper shortage, and repressed the political opposition.

Thursday's turnout could be lower than Wednesday's, in part because the latter was a holiday commemorating Venezuela's struggle for independence from Spain, journalist Stefano Pozzebon told CNN from Caracas.

The company said the illegal confiscation of its assets would cause "irreparable damage" to GM, its dealers and suppliers, and almost 2,700 employees of the plant.

Juventus hold firm to knock out Barcelona
Enrique forlornly turned to Paco Alcacer from the bench as the host played with four forwards for the final half hour. The Colombian then had another shot turned behind by Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Venezuela's Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for information.

Figures published by pollster Venebarometro show seven in 10 Venezuelans disapprove of Maduro, whose term does not end until 2019.

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of the South American country again Thursday to demand elections and denounce what they consider an essentially dictatorial government.

For weeks, opposition demonstrators have held violent protests in several cities across the country, calling for regime change and worldwide intervention.

The chief prosecutor's office reported Thursday that a National Guard sergeant was killed and a colonel injured when their squad was attacked with gunfire while trying to control disturbances in a city near Caracas.

The opposition said they have no intention of pulling back on protests that were triggered when the government-stacked Supreme Court three weeks ago gutted congress of its last vestiges of power, a move that was later reversed amid a storm of worldwide criticism.

Bryan Rust scored twice for Pittsburgh, Phil Kessel added his second of the playoffs and Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 49 saves. The Hawks will head home to lick their wounds while the Preds will wait for the victor of the Blues-Wild series, which St.

On Thursday, Maduro said the opposition was ready to begin a political dialogue, which his opponents denied. But the sharp deterioration of the economy, which has put many foods and medicines out of the reach of the average citizen, and a more organized and united opposition coalition have injected fresh energy into the current protests.

But the government hasn't backed down.

The US State Department said it was reviewing details of the GM case but called on Venezuelan authorities to act swiftly and transparently to resolve the dispute.

Several dozen employees, in baseball hats and blue shirts adorned with the GM and Cadillac logos, gathered by the plant's main gates in the city of Valencia on Thursday.

President Maduro said Wednesday authorities had arrested more than 30 protesters engaged in violence, including an alleged leader of a group of rioters who was caught with explosives.
