WHO's latest data shows that hepatitis C - for which there is no vaccine - is most commonly spread through unsafe injections, notably among drug users. The number of children infected with hepatitis B has been "reduced dramatically", and the number of those children who become chronic carriers of hepatitis B, and thus at risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer, is declining substantially, she said.
However, most of the 325 million people infected are completely unaware they have the virus and some lack life-saving medicines. Annually 6-10 million people are newly infected and 1.4 million die due to viral hepatitis.
