"Now that the cause and manner of death have been determined, the brain will be released to Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center as Mr. Hernandez's family wishes", DA Joseph Early Jr. said in a statement.
"The family of Aaron Hernandez has chose to donate Aaron's brain to the study so we can possibly help other young men who play football. further the cause, and possibly shed light and provide more evidence on this case", Baez said.
Jose Baez, Hernandez's lead attorney in his recent double murder trial, said the family made arrangements with the medical examiner on Wednesday to donate Hernandez's brain to Boston University's CTE Center.
The declaration by prosecutors, state police and public health officials came after a tumultuous day in which Hernandez's lawyer suggested the state was mishandling the investigation and illegally withholding his brain after releasing the rest of the body to a funeral home.
"It is our position that they are holding Aaron Hernandez's brain illegally", Baez told reporters, adding that Hernandez's legal team would head "straight to court" if it did not "get answers and answers quickly".
Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit when he was found hanging from a bed sheet that he had attached to his cell window, according to officials.
