North Korea 'ready for nuclear attack'

Irune Rengel | 16 Abril, 2017, 15:28

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday saluted as ranks of goose-stepping soldiers followed by tanks and other military hardware paraded in Pyongyang for a show of strength with tensions mounting over his nuclear ambitions.

Hours before Pence left, North Korea showed off its ICBMs in a military display at the annual parade in the capital that celebrates the birthday of the North's founding ruler, the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea has made no secret of its desire to boost its military power, while a USA naval strike group is approaching close to waters off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force, following high-profile US military attacks this month on Syria and the Islamic State in a remote part of Afghanistan.

The parade also featured the "Pukguksong-2", a land-based variant of the submarine-launched missile.

CCTV announced yesterday that Air China - the only foreign carrier operating commercial flights into North Korea - would suspend services to Pyongyang from next week.

South Korea is in the final phase of developing an indigenous low-tier missile defense system to better cope with North Korea's growing missile threats, a military official here said Sunday.

Military airplanes flew in formation above Kim Il Sung Square where the day's festivities were held. Washington swiftly dismissed the idea, but some observers have said administration officials may be becoming more amenable to renewed dialogue with the North.

North Korea has often celebrated major anniversaries with weapons tests.

"It certainly appears to be a message to the United States that they're capable of threatening the USA homeland".

Pang Zhongying of the School of International Studies at Beijing's Renmin University agreed that military action was unlikely, but said another North Korean nuclear test would mark "the crossing of a red line" that China was prepared to respond to. This matters because while North Korea regularly launches short-range missiles, it is also developing mid-range and long-range missiles meant to target US troops in Asia and, eventually, the USA mainland. But the USA will respond to North Korea's threats accordingly and won't engage Pyongyang until it "chooses a more peaceful way forward". Administration officials said Thursday it's considering economic sanctions and military options if a provocation by North Korea occurs.

The arrival follows what is perceived as a shift in U.S. military policy under President Donald Trump.

Kim, in his trademark black suit, attended the ceremony along with other senior military and party officials, The Guardian reported.

In a call with Sergei Lavrov later Friday, Wang Yi said the common goal of the two nations was to "bring all the parties back to the negotiating table", according to a statement on China´s Foreign Ministry website. President Trump has sent USA warships to the area as a show of force and that has everyone in the region feeling more tense than usual. Asked about North Korea this week, he told reporters: "North Korea is a problem".

Trump tweeted, "I explained to the president of China that a trade deal with the United States will be far better for them if they solve the North Korean problem!"

Mr Han Song said North Korea changed its military strategy two years ago, when the reports of "decapitation strike" training began to really get attention, to stress pre-emptive actions. Expectations are high the North may put its newest missiles on display during Saturday's parade.

"Once a war really happens, the result will be nothing but multiple loss".
