This week, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos quietly issued a decree reversing actions by President Obama to ease the burden of people struggling to pay off those loans. The protections, which were issued by former Education Secretary John King and former Undersecretary Ted Mitchell, were outlined in a series of three memorandums. Those loans were the jackpot for the company, the lawsuit argues, because they were guaranteed by the government, which steps in to reimburse the lender when a borrower defaults.

She alleges that requiring student loan debtors to be handled with a more compassionate approach is too expensive. In 2016, the average graduate held a little more than $37,000 in student debt, a six percent increase from 2015. With the possibility that other federal student loan protections could face the same fate, the Attorneys General from dozens of states are reminding former students of defunct for-profit college chain Corinthian Colleges to apply for federal student loan discharges.

The decision to withdraw the memos, coupled with the current outage of an IRS data-retrieval tool that makes it easier for borrowers to certify their eligibility for income-driven repayment plans, have raised alarms that the department is not focusing enough on borrowers' interests.

Projected student loan savings assumed a borrower entering repayment on a 10-year standard repayment schedule. Unfortunately, an estimated 4 million borrowers are still unable to make the required payments and are now in default.

Forbearance is for those who don't qualify for deferments, but still can't make payments.

A suit brought by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau claims that Navient saved itself money by steering borrowers into costly repayment strategies that added billions in interest to their balances.

Myth: Private loans offer better rates. The memos also offered servicers incentives to reduce the number of defaulted loans. However, those memos have been formally withdrawn by DeVos, who said that they fell short of their aims and that they were inconsistent, though there was no further explanation given as to what those inconsistencies and shortcomings were.

In a letter to James Runcie, who heads the Federal Student Aid office, DeVos said: "We must create a student loan servicing environment that provides the highest quality customer service and increases accountability and transparency for all borrowers, while also limiting the cost to taxpayers". These plans are a much better option than late or missing student loan payments.

Communication between borrowers and the companies that service their student loans can play a large part in helping people avoid defaults or stay certified for an income-based repayment plan. Unfortunately, the GAO determined many borrowers were unaware of that particular option.

If you can't afford to pay your student loan bill, don't blow it off. However, some borrowers simply ignore their advice.

Citing a determination that "a threat to the secretary's safety exists", the US Marshals Service said it would continue providing her a security detail, though it would not detail the nature of the threat.

At the time, the Dept. had approved more than 12,000 additional claims from borrowers deceived by CCI's falsified job placement rates since the most recent borrower defense claims report released in October 2016, the agency said.
